Fitness- Use It Or Lose It

Here’s my best advice when it comes to fitness… and probably everything else. USE IT OR LOSE IT. I’m 53. The common sentiment everyone likes – no LOVES- to express is some kinda common core sympathy, “the older we get… the more it all hurts… the slower we heal” …yada yada yada.

#1. I’m tired of hearing this because …I’m in denial! 🙂 AND…

#2. …I kinda disagree. Since when does it really HELP anything to express that type of negativity… over… and over… AND OVER?!

Here’s my disagreement though: In the last 3 years I’ve picked up a new sport… SOCCER. Yep, at 50! I used to be all volleyball. Out in the middle of nowhere (rural Missouri), I struggled to teach my 5 girls volleyball. They were never able to get hooked up with a really good team, but they picked up enough skills that they can enjoy the game. But then I had 3 boys… and they like soccer. My x-husband played soccer in college. He invested one short stint of coaching YMCA ball with the boys when they were kindergarten-ish, and that was it. As they grew older, if I got the kids’ friend group together to play soccer on a Friday night, he would play with us but that’s as far as it went. Time passed and I got a much needed divorce (not because of the lack of soccer, but because of serious abuses). When my oldest son reached middle school, I started learning to coach the boys… and found out that as I taught them foot skills- I could learn them too! Growing up I never liked soccer… I thought I hated running… and what else do you do in soccer but RUN? But low and behold, because I loved my kids, I got into the game, and found out that I can actually USE MY FEET and that’s it’s seriously fun!

So back to Use It Or Lose It. I have paid for my new found soccer addiction. In the last 3 years I : sprained my ankles multiple times – medium severity, no massive blow outs. The next year I dislocated my right wrist blocking a serious smasher of a kick in the goal box (9 months to heal). Last winter I dislocated a rib (courtesy of an overly zealous chiropractor- not kidding.)
